The Harvest at 47th Avenue Farm
Because the Willamette Valley is so temperate, we can offer excellent produce through the winter, from November through April, in a unique winter share. During this time, the shareholders will come to the farm twice a month to pick up freshly harvested vegetables. It’s a great way to eat well through the rainy winter months.
A whole share is designed to provide enough vegetables to feed a family of four. The week’s offering will vary according to the season. It starts in late spring with sugar peas, various greens, and all the elements of an ecstatic salad. The season reaches its peak in August and September, when shareholders take home lush late-summer tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and basil.
How It Works
Shareholders come to the farm once a week to pick up their share of the produce (the kinds of shares available are listed to the right). We’ll post a list to tell you how much food to take. The weekly pick-up offers ample opportunity for sampling and socializing.
Please note: While a share entitles you to the bounty of the harvest, it also means a share of the risk. On occasion a crop may fail due to inclement weather, pests, disease, or other conditions beyond our control. Our goal is to bring you, despite these challenges, an abundant and diverse harvest throughout the season.
Share Options
To create a range of options for shareholders, the we offer a variety of different types of shares:
Farm Patron Share
The cost of a regular share is priced to be competitive with local natural food stores, and covers most of the farm’s expenses — except your farmer’s salary. To help soften that expense, we offer a special Farm Patron share which more accurately reflects the true cost of growing your food.
Whole Share
Every household is different, but in our experience, this share will provide most of the vegetables needed to feed a family of four for the week.
Half Share
This is for smaller households.
Working Share
In exchange for 12 hours of work during the season, working shareholders will receive a $30 price reduction. Working shareholders will sign up for tasks at the beginning of the season. Opportunities include helping out with pick-up, participating in work parties, working on the news-letter, and a variety of other tasks.
Three work parties and potluck celebrations will be scheduled over the course of the season, which both working and regular shareholders are encouraged to attend.
The Egg Share
Our friends at Sweet Well Farm will be providing eggs for our CSA members again this year.
The Goat Cheese Share
Pierre Kolisch studied cheese making in France and started the Juniper Grove Farm about 15 years ago. They have about 100 goats in eastern Oregon, near Redmond and they have been coming to the Portland Farmers Market for years. The cheese share will be a different type of goat cheese each week.
